Activities:

The SPYC has been involved in a program for the last four years with the Sonars used as practice for Paralympic and other major events. SPYC has held two of the four international Disabled Sailing Regattas in the last two years held in Sonars and had the honor of holding the only Pre-Paralympic practice Regatta in 1996 with 9 of the 15 countries sailing. We also offered the site for practice with 11 of the 15 teams sailing here prior to Atlanta. Gene Hinkel (Bosun for Major International Regattas) ran the program until after the Paralympics and joined Serge Jorgensen (Coach for the US Bronze Medal Team ) of Sailing Alternatives to expand the operation to include the 2.4mR's. We are now the site for the IFDS Americas Regional Regatta and was the first YC to host both classes together this past October. The sailing is out of the St. Petersburg Sailing Center which is city owned but staffed by the SPYC. The City of St. Petersburg has just finished a major reconstruction of the Sailing Center with upgrades of existing bathrooms and the addition of two new handicap bathrooms with showers. We also have an easy access ramp to the floating docks and two Hoyer lifts. We are committed to provide a location for any disabled sailor who wants to have a practice site to prepare for Sydney.
